Advice for the incoming cohort, Alby 12-13...

What would you like to have known in May 2011? What could you tell this new group that might help them get the most out of this year and perhaps avoid some of the stress and pitfalls you experienced?

1) Please choose TWO times for me to visit, one before March 27th and one after.
2) Those at a distance (Josh, Abby, and Allison) should take sign up for two slots in a row each time so that I can work in driving time.
3) Look at everyone else's posts so you don't sign up for a slot someone else has signed up for.
4) When you choose a time slot, tell me the exact time you want me to show up.

Choose your topic!

Here are the topics you can choose for your podcast. Remember: the goal is to read as much as possible on the topic separately from the other person who has the same topic. Then when you are really knowledgeable, you will come together and discuss the topic (like they do on the podcast "Stuff you should know"). You will be able to edit your podcast before it goes public.

Remember that once two people have chosen a topic, you can't choose it. Josh won the draw, so he can choose any topic he wants, even if it has been chosen by two others already. If you see he has chosen a topic plus one other person has, that topic is still alive!

1. What important ideas did John Dewey come up with, and how did he influence education?
2. What is the ideal classroom environment (wall color, temperature, lighting, etc.)?
3. How do emotions influence learning?
4. What do teachers need to know about metacognition?
5. How do teachers' expectations of students affect their learning?
6. How do movement/exercise/sports influence learning?
7. Do music lessons really make students smarter?

9. Why is Lev Vygotsky referenced more often than any other educational theorist?

Six Word Memoirs

Between the written article, the radio story, and the "gallery" there were a lot to choose from. I am torn between two as my favorites: "Asked to quiet down. Spoke louder" and "Naively expected logical world. Acted foolishly." I will try to write one of my own later.
