Choose your topic!

Here are the topics you can choose for your podcast. Remember: the goal is to read as much as possible on the topic separately from the other person who has the same topic. Then when you are really knowledgeable, you will come together and discuss the topic (like they do on the podcast "Stuff you should know"). You will be able to edit your podcast before it goes public.

Remember that once two people have chosen a topic, you can't choose it. Josh won the draw, so he can choose any topic he wants, even if it has been chosen by two others already. If you see he has chosen a topic plus one other person has, that topic is still alive!

1. What important ideas did John Dewey come up with, and how did he influence education?
2. What is the ideal classroom environment (wall color, temperature, lighting, etc.)?
3. How do emotions influence learning?
4. What do teachers need to know about metacognition?
5. How do teachers' expectations of students affect their learning?
6. How do movement/exercise/sports influence learning?
7. Do music lessons really make students smarter?
8. How are middle schools different because of John H. Lousbury?
9. Why is Lev Vygotsky referenced more often than any other educational theorist?

  1. I would like the "ideal classroom environment" topic for my group (number 2). If that is already taken I'd like to do the "emotions and learning" query(number 3).

  2. I think I'm going to research option number 2 "What is the ideal classroom environment (wall color, temperature, lighting, etc.)?"

  10. I'd be more than happy learning more about each of these topics so I'm down for researching the leftovers. I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned 5: How do teacher's expectations of students affect their learning? It's all about pulling them up, not putting them down (even though that can be a[n] [extremely] challenging task).

  11. If Josh is in the group of three, that means I can do #8 with him and Brent, right?

If not, I wouldn't mind taking whatever is leftover.

  12. I would definitely have preferred #8, but since I was out of town all weekend without access to internet (other than my phone) I lost out on that one.

So I'm gonna go with #1: "What important ideas did John Dewey come up with, and how did he influence education?" I've never really understood the Dewey Decimal System anyway (why can't we just separate by genre and alphabetize by author's last name - wouldn't that be simpler?!) This will give me a chance to better understand it.
