Questions for Abby Gibson

24 comments:

  1. You have great taste in books. I love "Time Traveler's Wife" and "Middlesex." I may have to check out some of the others you mentioned. It is a great idea to teach English overseas. Why do you think you are especially attracted to that?

  2. Abby, I've known you since Freshman Seminar with Dr. Whitaker (yay for being possibly the only two people in that class to actually stick it out as English Lit majors!!) Even still, there are things about you that I am just now learning through reading your autobiography.

I am also very much a quotes person. I have notebooks filled with them. What would you say is your favorite quote (or one of your favorite quotes)?

  3. What did you do in Maldova that made you decide you wanted to teach English overseas?

  4. Abs, I mean Abby, since you were a cheerleader, do you think "Bring It On," successfully captured the competitive cheerleading atmosphere? And on a more serious note, what's your favorite movie?

  5. Dr. Alby, I think I am more attracted to teaching overseas because it seems like a challenge to me. I will be thrown into a culture I won't be super familiar with and at the same time have a chance to travel. I think it is a win-win!

  6. I know! Andrew, we have been together from the beginning and now we will be together through the end! I couldn't pick just one, but I LOVED about a 100 wonderful quotes from "Eat, Pray, Love." I recommend the book to everyone, the movie didn't do it justice.

  7. Katherine, in Moldova I was on a mission trip. I used to think I wanted to do mission work after I graduated, but then my views on religion changed. But, meeting the people and just being immersed in another culture is just fascinating to me. So, even though I'll be teaching them, I'll be learning so much.

  8. Jonathan, Brent, hmm... No, "Bring It On" didn't capture it haha. Competition cheerleading is a pretty intense sport, with a massive amount of injuries throughout the season. But, it was fun! My favorite movie? Wow, what a question. I love, cliche I know, "Pride and Prejudice." But, I also love "Braveheart," it's a family favorite. What's yours?

  9. Hey Abby! I am also interested in teaching abroad. Have you found a program that facilitates that kind of experience?

  10. Oh my gosh, Erin. I have so much information for you! I am quite to researcher so, we need to get some coffee or something and talk! I should have read your question before responding to your bio! Haha. I'm glad you'll be in the cohort too!

  11. you say that you like to journal a lot. do you think that now that we have a blog site, that you will be able to ignite that old flame for journalism and make more time for it? Which do you find easier to do? Write in a book or online? I personally love the feel of a pencil scribbling across pages...

  12. Hi Abby,
I think To Write Love on Her Arms is a great organization and I really admire the fact that you introduced this to GC&SU. What or who inspired you to get GC&SU students involved with To Write Love on Her Arms?

  13. Abby,

Did you ever take a dance class here at GCSU? I took tap dance one semester but I found it kind of annoying because the class is only worth 1 credit but it met twice a week for an hour and 15 minutes. Anyway...have you talked to Mrs. Stapleton since you had her as a teacher?

  14. Abby,

I read the "Geography of Bliss" and in it the author says Moldova was one of the unhappiest places he had ever visited. What was your take on it? Did you enjoy your time there?

  15. I read that you enjoyed And Then There Were None, do you like other Agatha Christie stories,if so which ones; and do you like/ have you read anything by Dorothy Sayers?

  16. Hey Abby,
I am NOT an animal person either. As I've gotten older, I have come to appreciate animals more, but still not my thing really. ha. Is there a reson you don't really like animals? I know that from growing up and being yelled at to "STAY AWAY FROM THE DOG/CAT/Whatever" probably had something to do with mine...And I think teaching abroad would be awesome. I'm coming with you and Erin if you guys go and talk about it!

  17. Danielle, I usually would say I love the feeling of physically writing myself too. But, since I have been so all over the place lately I do a lot of journaling on my Ipad!

  18. Amber, I had a lot of personal encounters with suicide and the effects it had on people close to me. I knew that if I had the opportunity I was not going to stand by and let it go unnoticed. I just wanted to bring something to campus to give people who need it a space and voice to discuss their issues and learn from each other!

Marina, I have never taken dance at GCSU I kind of grew out of it haha. Yes, I do keep in touch. Not as much because she is married now and a new mom. But, she is my first person to go to whenever I have questions.

Christnine Maria, I LOVED Moldova. It is definitely in poverty and it would be an understatement to say their culture is the complete opposite of ours. But the scenery is beautiful, the people are mostly welcoming and I loved their food!

Lorien, I actually cannot remember if I read more Agatha Christie. I went through a phase then of reading different genres and authors. No I have not. Would you recommend to me one of her books? I'll add it to my list :)

Brittany, well I got bitten by a dog when I was younger and it took a chunk out of my leg. That has a lot to do with it. But, I'm not as scared of them as I used to be. I still don't like big dogs, but my boyfriend's cat is warming up to me (shh don't tell!) Definitely come with us to talk to Dr. Mumma! We talked to him some at the meeting about maybe student teaching in Sweden in the Fall semester as one of our two schools. Email or call me!! I'll find you somehow haha.

  19. Abby:

We've spoken some online but I realize now that I haven't written on your little question thing. Sorry for the delay. I am losing at the blog.

You get awesomeness points for being a movie fanatic, as well as points for To Write Love on Her Arms, and being a "good vibes" kind of person. Oh, and also for not being an animal person---my girlfriend is a vet tech and I think I hate animals only because I come in second to her cats.

Someone already asked you your favorite movie though. How about this: if you had the power to stop ONE book from ever being adapted into a film, would you use it and if so, for what book? (Bonus: You have the power to undo one travesy, too. Go!)

  20. I have a question similar to Nick, my friends and I were discussing the other day how with every movie adaptation readers always say "the book is better." Is there any movie vs book that you think the movie is actually better?

  21. Rose, this is Abby's question so I'll sit back, but you've got the gears spinning in my head to come up with a solid dozen instances where this is the case.

  22. Hmmm those are some difficult questions. I know the first movie that popped into my mind about taking it back would be the Time Traveler's Wife. God, I loved the book and then when the movie came out it killed me to watch because they left out the parts that were what made the book understandable and great! I don't know how anyone was able to understand the movie who hadn't read the book, in my opinion. And then the sisterhood of the traveling pants. Most definitely the series was way better. (I know those are both very girly but they are the first to pop into my head and that I felt the most strongly about).

    Rose,
At the moment I can't think of something that the movie was better. But, like Nick you have my wheels turning so I'm going to keep thinking!

  23. [The Godfather] is the easy one. The book paled in comparison. I read [The Wonderful Wizard of Oz] as a child, but do not remember it, but I don't see how it could hold up to the '39 film.

I've never read [Gone With the Wind], but from what I hear, that's a situation where either answer is acceptable. Most of my examples fall into this category, I suppose.

Word is that an adaptation of my favorite book, [As I Lay Dying], will be out within the next year or two. If that ever sees the light of day, I will be irritated. That book would be impossible to do.

  24. Put [To Kill a Mockingbird] on my list, too. I might be biased towards the movie only because I dislike the book so much, but Gregory Peck's performance is indeed top notch, so I'll count it.
