Questions for Marina Goddard

  1. I am also concerned that people are missing out on the glory of Bartram Forest! So excited that you are a poet! Do you perhaps have a short poem you could share here on the blog?

  2. Marina!! I had no idea you were Cuban! Awesomeness! (Now I know who's helping me with Spanish from now on ;-P). My question involves Bartram. Have you ever tried walking through the labyrinth/maze there? (Or at least it used to be).

PS: the last line of you Autobio has both a rhyme (lakes/snakes) and a false rhyme (swim/them). :-)

  3. I'm glad everyone loves Bartram, I have always found it to be one of the most relaxing places in Milledgeville.

After working with Early College what has been the best lesson you've learned that you would pass on to the rest of us?

  4. Hi Marina,
Your interest in fashion is something we have in common, so I’m curious to know what is your favorite fashion era? I personally love the ‘60s and ‘70s…you can’t go wrong with platform shoes and a ton of eyeliner!

  5. What's the best live concert you've ever been to? And have you ever been in a mosh pit?

  8. I had no idea you were a dancer! Do you think, that with your dancing experience, which means you know rhythm and movement, that you could incorporate something like that int olesson plans? Like an activity that gets the kids moving almost like a dance but learning at the same time?

  9. Dr. Alby,
I will have to thumb through my poetry and pick one out to share! It's nice being in the company of fellow poets.

    Andrew,

Yes I have walked the maze! I've walked it a couple times. I've discovered that the best time to walk it is when it's chilly out because the grass is dead and the animals are hiding. I walked it during the summer once (while it was being ignored by the mower apparently) and my legs were tickled and scratched the entire way because of how tall the grass was, and I spent a lot of time looking at the ground making sure I didn't step on a snake or lizard. And those rhymes must be a product of my subconscious attention to sound! :]

    Katie,

The biggest lesson I've learned through Early College is to push your students. They can always give more than they think they can and to be honest I think some of them wrote better poems than I can write. Ask them questions and make them dig in their imaginations. They have it, you just have to get them to give it to you.

    Amber,
I love the free flowing attitude of the 1960s, but I hate polyester, haha. I also idolize the the curled prim and proper hairstyles of the 1940s. In a sense, I can't wait for a few decades to go by and then look back and know what we dressed like in the "2000's."

    Brent,

For a variety of reasons I have to say I loved seeing The Avett Brothers live the most. They played in Augusta, GA in an outdoor amphitheater with the Savannah River behind them. AWESOME. No I haven't ever been in a mosh pit, I would probably end up trampled in a pile on the ground, haha.

    Erin,

I actually picked up knitting from my grandmother. She tried to teach me to crochet also, but that was and still is too difficult for me to learn. I did a little cross stitching too, but that seemed really redundant after working on a project for a while although the final product looks really neat. I hate how I don't have very much time to knit more.

    Abby,

I really love writing about nature and animals in it. I also like to take ordinary things in the world and give them a gothic feel. I wrote a poem about toes that I might post up on here soon.

    Danielle,

I think that I probably could and that is a splendid idea! We could teach a class together: you can sing and I can dance haha! But I haven't really thought about doing that. I'll have to try to incorporate something into future lesson plans.

  10. Hey Marina!

I work in Admissions now, although I'm sure the GCSU admissions office is A LOT different than my office. Other than delivering good news, what else do you enjoy about your job? Is there anything you absolutely don't like?

  11. Marina,
Thanks for telling us about Bartram Forest, I'm really looking forward to visiting there! I used to dance too, until an injury took me off point- it's not as sad as it sounds- gave me more time to focus on theater. My question is, which type of dance was your favorite? Personally, I hated tap because I was no good at it.

  12. Christine,

I was only able to work there for a year because the office hours are 8-4 and after a while I ended up having classes that interfered with that schedule so I would only be able to work an hour a day. I definitely can say that I disliked all the paper cuts I would get. So much paper!! I loved the people I worked with, though. My particular boss was a lady in her 70s who still went hunting with her husband and liked nascar. She was pretty great I must say.

    Rose,

I hope you do get to visit there! I love tap a lot because of how upbeat it is and I seemed to have a knack for it. I liked ballet okay, but I wasn't fabulous at it and it was boring most of the time. I think jazz is up there with tap--it was always fun to do. I guess they all had their pluses and minuses!

  13. What are your favorite fashions and designers or do you like a more eclectic approach? I know you write poetry which doesn't always focus on characters' external appearance but when you read literature do you pay more attention to characters when their clothes are described as well as their physicality or less?

  14. Lorien,

I really don't have a favorite designer, I am more eclectic just as you said. Sometimes one of my favorite things to do is just buy really random things I find for small prices, then try and incorporate them into my wardrobe to produce unique styles. And yes, I really do pay attention to clothing while reading. I have never noticed that about myself until you asked! Sometimes clothes are not described, so I visualize them on my own judging by their personality.

  15. Hey Marina,
Like you, I am fascinated by people who can speak more than one language! More jealous than anything though. I minored in Spanish and would love to be fluent one day. If you plan on teaching it one day, then how do you think you will learn the language again? By traveling somewhere or taking classes...? I would prefer to travel...

  16. Hi Brittany!

I am fascinated by people who can speak more than one language also! It is amazing to me how they can just switch their brain between languages. I think you are right with the traveling idea. I believe it would be better to immerse myself within the language and culture in order to really be able to communicate because flash cards only get you so far I think. I hope I don't forget too much of it over the years though!

  17. Marina:

Sorry to be so late with a question. Just going through doing housekeeping and realizing that I'm a terrible person who has neglected to write to half of the people in my group.

As a music/book/what-have-you fanatic, I always like getting people's "lists". So...what's your dream concert bill?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey Nick!
    hmm dream concert.

I would have to say (in no particular order) I would like to see in one day:

Phish, Fleetwood Mac, Mumford & Sons, DMB, The Avett Brothers, and Beyonce. Definitely a variety, but that would be great!
