Questions for Rose Williams

22 comments:

  1. It is great to see that we are getting a mix of English types - creative writing, theater, literature, etc. It makes the cohort all the more rich to have people with different ways of looking at English. What kinds of special things will you bring to the classroom because of your background in theater?

  2. I thought it was really cute and unique that you and your husband made your own wedding music together. :) How did you go about creating the music and where did you record it? Did you two write lyrics and sing together or was it instrumental music?

  3. Rose, I think it is great that you have a background in theatre. I can tell you obviously have a passion for it. Would you ever teach drama or help out with theatre productions at whatever school you end up at? If you were what production would you choose to do?

  4. Wow, what great questions!

Cynthia, I could write pages on this question, but I am going to try and leave this answer brief. I believe I will bring many different things to the classroom due to my theatrical background. Theatre taught me to look at a text from different angles, and to really put life into the story. It also taught me how to empathize with the characters and writer and try to find each characters motive as well as the writers overall message. I hope to bring to help teach these perspectives to my students. Theatre also taught me to be speak up as well as listen, both of which I think are important qualities in a teacher. I also hope to bring some of my theatre techniques to improve overall text understanding in the classroom. For example, many people struggle with Shakespeare, however he is not so hard if you try to act out his plays. When you look at what the character is trying to say and their motive rather than get caught up in the words it makes understanding for Shakespeare and other hard texts a lot easier.

Amber, we did instrumental music. We recorded a few different pieces with help of our local church and their equipment. For the wedding we ended up using a few of the Beatles covers we had recorded. My favorite song we used is "In My Life" by the Beatles; I walked down the aisle to this. For our songs my husband played the guitar and I the piano. Most of our family and friends are musicians as well, so we had a lot of live performers too.

Katherine, while I am looking forward to being an English teacher, I would love to help any school out with their theatre department. If I could produce any play at a school, I would choose to do a student written play. I believe that producing student written plays could be beneficial to the students, the school and the community. The play would be a wonderful learning experience for the students. The young playwright could have a since of pride in their work and get to see their words in action. Seeing the play done is very important to a playwright because many things that work on paper do not read on stage. It would also help teach the students their differences and similarities. For example, they may all really love and identify with the play but for completely different reasons. The experience would give the students a since of self voice and learn how to combine that voice with their peers, building both teamwork and leadership skills. The play could benefit the school because such a production would cost next to nothing and make a great fundraiser. The play could also promote and showcase the school's English and Theatre departments. The community could learn a lot about their youth, what the youth is thinking about and so forth from the play as well. The production could give parents pride and insight on their students.

Thank you all for your great questions!

  5. Rose, so your birthday is on April Fools? What is the best April Fools joke anyone ever played on you?

  6. Random fact. The current preacher at Snellville United Methodist actually married my parents. What a small world.

As a theatre major which playwrights have inspired you the most?

  7. You said you love camping. What's the best camping spot you've been to?

  8. Rose, I'm going to ask the general question first: why not teach theatre if you have such a passion for it? And if not teaching it, then do you plan to incorporate theatre into your teaching style?

Also, i am a gwinnettian as well, i went to Dacula High, (your school's rival) and know exactly where Music and Arts is. I bought my piano books from there. Since you love music so much, what is your favorite genre? Do you play an instrument?

  9. Rose:
I guess I have a couple. But first and foremost, the whole wedding music thing is the most awesome thing I have ever heard in my life. I like that you worked at a music store for a while...I really would like to do something like that as a hobby. I love fiddling around with/fixing up old guitars for the fun of it. I have several even though I am no longer cool and in a band. What kind of guitars do you have (assuming you own one or more)?

Also, to branch off on the "favorite playwright", what's your favorite play?

  10. Rose,

What attracted you to directing rather than acting?

  11. Rose, I recently got engaged so I WILL be bugging you for wedding planning tips. I wish I was creative enough to create my own music for my wedding! That is SO cool. Anyway, since you are a theater girl, what have been some of your favorite plays to have worked on? I know you studied to be a director, but did you ever have a favorite role?

  12. I'll just go in order and see how much Blogger lets me post.

    Brent-
I have had some good ones played on me, mostly by my older brother. One of the best ones was when my brother and his friends partially filled my room up with "presents" when I was about 8 or so. When I got home from school that day, I went to my room as saw what seemed to be 30-50 presents, so I started unwrapping with intense joy and anticipation. The presents were all empty, except for one, which was a VCR that I really wanted at the time (lol, my very own VCR,that dates this story). Also, one year my brother convinced me that we had skipped my birthday, and it was already April 2nd, which means they could not even celebrate my birthday so I couldn’t get older, I’d have to stay 4 for another year.

    Erin-
It is such a small world! So many of our classmates are from our area. They do have a great preacher there, but we had our own preacher marry us at the church. Every playwright really inspires and changes the people working on the play in some way. That being said, Tennessee Williams is my favorite. I really love his work. He writes himself into every character and scene, and it's so interesting and honest. He explores the idea that there is a little bit of everyone in each of us. I also love Christopher Durang, for his absurd humor. And I am somewhat obligated to mention Shakespeare, who I do love. Sarah Ruhl is one of my favorite female playwrights, she's strange, but interesting.

    Abigail-
My husband and his friends have just recently got me into camping. I thought I'd hate it, but from our first trip I loved it. I am no camping expert, but it is fun. There is an island on a lake in SC that we like to go to, it's so peaceful.

  13. Well, Blogger didn't let me post it all, here's the rest.
    Danielle-
There are many reasons I decided not to teach theatre. One is the economy, most theatre departments are not hiring- some even being dissolved. Another is I wanted to reach more students in my day. Also, and this is another economic reason, most of the time theatre teachers invest is volunteer. For example, out of all the rehearsals, shows, one-act events and so forth, most theatre teachers are only paid for one night of their time. And I want to have a family life, not give all my time to rehearsals at night. I've given a lot of myself to theatre and rehearsals and it's not what I really want for the rest of my life. I also helped student teach theatre in high school, and I am still very close to all my theatre teachers/professors. After that experience, and knowing so closely my theatre teachers, I saw it was not for me.
I think theatre will be incorporated in my classroom in many ways. For one, theatre has taught me to look at texts from all possible angles, something I’d like to share with my students. Theatre also taught me when to speak up and when to listen, which is important to a teacher and to teach a student. I could go on for days/ pages about this but I’ll leave it brief.
‘Very cool that you’ve been to Music & Arts, it’s a fun store to work for- sometimes. It’s very hard to say what my favorite genre to listen to is. I really love all music. I have a very special place in my heart for The Beatles. Usually I listen to the radio and just shuffle stations until I hear a song I like or that sounds good. I’m always looking for new bands. I will say that I tend to like rap, r&b and heavy metal the least, although all of those genres do have some good songs. I play piano, violin, guitar and I sing. As far as my favorite genre to play, I love playing classical music the most for piano and violin. I’m not as good on the guitar, right now I’m sticking to oldies and pop songs. And I love to sing just about anything.

    Nicholas,
That’s awesome that you like to fix old guitars, you’d really want to work more in a shop then the retail side. A lot of luthiers are secretive with their methods (because they want to stay competitive in the current job market) but you can learn a lot just by trial and error. My grandfather had a business dealing in stringed instruments. He bought, sold, and fixed any stringed instrument, mostly guitars. My husband dabbles in fixing guitars too but he doesn’t have many tools at his disposal right now, so here’s the list of our working guitars; Charvel acoustic/ electric, Alvarez acoustic, Martin acoustic, Ibanez electric, Hamer electric, Fender electric. My favorites are the Martin and the Fender. The Fender is an American Stratocaster that my grandfather had my name engraved on, it’s sentimental and plays really well.
My favorite playwright is Tennessee Williams. For more detail, see my answer to Erin. Weird fact about Tennessee Williams and me, his sister (and muse) was named Rose Williams and when he wrote her into his plays he used the name Laura. Weird, but not why he’s my favorite. His sister was also insane and had a lobotomy-- which is not like me.

    Marina,
I chose directing for a lot of reasons. I love acting, and I love the technical side of theatre, directing gave me access to both sides. I felt directing was more rewarding then acting. I was able to be a creative head over the play and help other create, then I could step back and enjoy what as a group we had made. I also loved helping other’s grow in their art. Directing is finding your own voice while helping others find theirs, it’s very rewarding. As the director you really get to enjoy creating the play from all aspects, reading, research, technical, acting, ect.

  14. Christine,
Congratulations! Come to me with any questions you have about planning, I know it is such a stressful time. The best advise I could give is to keep it simple. Don’t worry too much on the details, because on the day they wont matter half as much as you think they will. I honestly don’t remember and didn’t notice too much at my wedding because I was in a bubble of happiness and love. One thing I did regret was trying to fit too much into the day. I tried to hard to incorporate everyone’s traditions that I felt like I didn’t have enough time to enjoy the parts I wanted in the day. I wish the day would have slowed down and we would’ve had more time to enjoy the moment together. As far as budget, in the long run the photographer ended up being the most important to me, it’s what you really have to remember the day by.
Every play I have worked on has stuck with me in some way. To pin point my favorite is very difficult. I really enjoyed acting in Coyote Point mostly because of the cast and crew. I was in a cast with my boyfriend (now husband), our best friend, and some of our closest friends. Also our director was one of my mentors. It was nice to work directly with my mentor as my director. One of my favorite directing experience was directing Deliver Us Not, I had a cast of 3 people, and a crew member of one person with a budget of $100 (which is a ridiculously small budget for a play). I was able to really focus on just the basics of the play, and I had a great cast and crew.

  15. Sometimes I will spell theatre “re” and sometimes “er” it’s the difference between the British and American spelling, and many switch back and forth. For me it depends on what program I’m using- Word likes er and Pages likes re.

  16. Rose:

I'm too high-strung to ever do any work on anyone's instrument other than my own, I believe. That would be terrifying. I'm more of a "look at this interesting looking garage sale guitar. Wonder if I can make it work?" type person.

I've always wanted an American Strat. I told myself (back when I was in a band), that I would get one at high school graduation, but opted not to, because and I already had five guitars and I wanted to move out. So I told myself I'd get one as a present to myself once I graduate college. These days...maybe when I get my Master's? First big boy paycheck? No, probably not then either.

  17. Rose!
You have so many names! I couldn't believe that you already have 4 names minus adding the married one. Do you like having so many or would you prefer fewer? I personally like all the names a lot, but does it give you a hard time otherwise, like with forms or school?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I saw that you like to paint. Do you have any favorite artists? What are your favorite subjects to paint (landscapes, portraits, abstract modernist pieces)?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nick,
I totally understand about other people's instruments. But after you screw one up, the fear gets less, haha ( just kidding, kind of). What guitars do you have now?

    Brittany,
Yeah, it's been a constant source of confusion. I always forget what name different files are under. Did I order my glasses as Rose or Laurina or Laura? I usually just give all my names just in case. I've been thinking about when I take Downs as my last name changing all of it to just Rose Downs, but I don't know if I want to give up my family names or not. I go back and forth.

    Lorien,
I used to paint stage sets, making plywood look like buildings and such. I really loved set painting that I started trying to paint on a smaller scale.I am really just a beginner painter. Right now I mostly paint landscapes and work on techniques. I wish I could paint a face, or even a person but I never like what I paint when I try. I know it's very mainstream of me, but I went to a van Gogh exhibit years ago and he is still my favorite. I love his use of color. His paintings are so much more beautiful in person, as most paintings are. I also love the dreamy quality of his work. I’d love any tips for a beginner. Or if you know of any artists I might like.

  20. Rose:
I completely skipped over the Tennessee Williams answer. He is mine as well.

    Instrument run-down:
-'98 Gibson Les Paul Studio Wine Red
-Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Despite having a Gibson, this is my go-to pride and joy. I remember hoarding my lunch money in middle school so I could own this. I've made adjustments to it and it is great.)
-Ibanex GAX75 (First electric guitar I bought. I liked the little switch that allowed you to change to Drop-D with a flip of your pinky. Too bad it didn't work all that well.)
    -Fender Highway 1 Jazz Bass
-Fender something-or-other Acoustic (First guitar ever. I don't know why I still have it for any other reason. It was in the beginner pack I got as a kid.)
    -Takamine GS330 acoustic
-Taylor 214CE acoustic-electric (my other pride and joy)
    -Anonymous garage sale classical guitar

I have an army of amps, a couple of keyboards and an alto sax I still like to fool around with. Anything I write, I write initially on the keyboard. I am grateful for my piano lessons as a child.

Sadly, I am no longer in a band anymore. I live in an apartment where I cannot play anything. Most of my stuff is in Barrow County, lonely and awaiting the day when their owner becomes a homeowner. In the meantime, my brother is starting to take interest in playing music, so maybe he can give a couple of them the attention they deserve.

  21. Correction: I HOPE most of the stuff is in Barrow County. Every once in a while, my mom asks if she can sell any of it in a garage sale. I always throw a fit. I guess I should go home and check. Nothing I own is inherently expensive to begin with, so in most cases I'd rather hold onto them rather than take what marginal chunk change I could get for them.

  22. I like Van Gogh, but only a few pieces from his blue period and Starry Night. I love the Romantics, but more contemporary artists like Vettriano are also interesting. Vettriano's noir pieces, those in restaurants and on beaches carry an anticipatory, mysterious, slightly sinister feel remniscent of standing on a cliff edge at sundown with a group of strangers in formal clothing. One of my favorite pieces is The Singing Butler.
