I am excited about your background in psychology. We are going to do a lot of work this upcoming year on the concept of how to work with children who have self-esteem and behavioral issues. I am also interested in your background in art and music. What kind of ideas have you had about how to incorporate those into an English class?
I would like to incorporate art by asking my students to write their own short stories and include illustrations. I know that not everyone enjoys drawing, so I would encourage them to take photographs or use art that they created on a computer. I also thought it would be fun to get the kids to create a Fanzine. I think a Fanzine would be a great way for them to share their poems, lyrics, drawings, and short stories. Music would be a bit more difficult to incorporate, but I would like to try letting the students listen to music that was popular at the time the piece was written. For example, if we were reading a story in Old English, maybe I could let them listen to "Green Sleeves" or some kind of traditional folksong of the period. It could be a fun way to begin the assignment.
First off, I love your picture of Sasha. I have noticed that you are very interested in music. What type of music do you listen to and what's the best concert you have been to?
Hey Katherine, Sasha said thanks for the compliment :P Most of the stuff on my iPod is listed as "Alternative Rock", but I also enjoy some pop and classical music. As for the best concert I've seen...that is a tough one. I would probably have to say it's a toss up between a band called Placebo and an indie band called IAMX. Both shows were amazing.
Amber, I love bulldogs (UGA fan), but I hear they drool A LOT. Is this true and how do you deal with it? And what was your favorite memory from working with Caminar Latino?
I also love to know about personalities. Family and close members to our family have had their own episodes with depression. Did you do more research about it or is it a field you may one day get into with your psychology background? It is an area I am very interested in.
Hi Jonathan, It is true that bulldogs drool a lot. Sasha usually drools the worst when she is sleeping hard or whenever she is begging at the table (sweet potatoes make her drool the most). Bulldogs gulp a lot of air, so the worst problem they have is frequent gas. LOL
Hi Erin, My position involved working with the children of the families. I worked with children aged 8-12. Some of the parents that attended were court ordered to be there, but many came on their own for support. Along with other undergrad and graduate students, I taught the kids anger management and ways to deal with the negative psychological effects of violence. We also tutored them and talked with them individually to see if they were experiencing any personal issues.
Hi Abigail, I didn’t have the opportunity to do very much research that dealt specifically with depression, but it is something I would have loved to do. Luckily, I did get to read many interesting articles and studies on depression while I was taking my Abnormal Psychology class. I’ve considered looking into school counseling in the future, but unfortunately most school counselors only deal with academic problems rather than psychological problems. I think mental health is something that really needs to be given more attention in schools today.
Hi Danielle, Clay is definitely my favorite thing to work with…I’ve made a lot of vases and a few sculptures. I would also really like to get into jewelry making someday. When I was playing the piano most of my favorite pieces were by Beethoven. Moonlight Sonata is my absolute favorite piece to play…although I’ve probably forgotten how to play it by now. :P
Do your friends often ask you for advice because of your psychology major and sociology minor? And do you think psychology is something you want to teach in the future?
I can imagine a transition from Milledgeville to ATL would be hard! What were some of your favorite things about Atlanta? Or did you not enjoy it and miss the smaller town?
Also, I know what you mean about trying to get a decent job with only a BA.. ughh
Hi Marina, I’ve always found that my friends like to tell me about their problems. It is not so much that they are looking for advice (even though I sometimes give it anyway) as much as they want someone to just listen. I enjoy listening and I think it is something that I am good at so I’m glad they come to me with their problems. I would love to Psychology someday! Occasionally it is offered as an elective in high schools, so if I am ever given the opportunity I am definitely going to do it.
Hey Christine, The transition was difficult because I was away from my family and friends, and I had to learn my way around a big city without any help. My favorite thing about Atlanta was that there was so much stuff to do. I was surrounded by museums, venues, and cool places to shop. I also like that Atlanta is kind of a melting pot…there are so many different kinds of people and cultures in one area. I met a lot of interesting people there.
What are your favorite BBC shows? (I always loved Are You Being Served.) On a more scholastic note, did you ever read The Children With Emerald Eyes in any of your Psychology classes (it is one of my favorite books)?
Hey Lorien, Some of my favorite shows on BBC are Doctor Who (I'm a nerd...I know), Being Human, and How Clean is Your House(it always made me feel good about my messy room lol). The Children With Emerald Eyes was mentioned several times in my Psych classes, but it was never required reading so I never got around to reading it. It sounds really interesting and it is definitely something I plan on reading in the future.
Hey Amber, My roommate has gotten me totally hooked on HGTV. I used to make fun of her all the time, but I am in love with it now. What are some of your favorite shows on it? I prefer the house hunters or remodeling shows to see the before and afters...And I think one show is based out of Atlanta (Curb Appeal, maybe?)
Hey Brittany, Yes it is Curb Appeal that is based out of Atlanta. I also enjoy watching the before and after remodeling shows. If I had to pick a favorite then it would have to be The Antonio Project and Divine Design.

Can you explain your position with Caminar Latino? This is the first I have heard of it, but it sounds like a wonderful organization.

ReplyDeleteyour bulldog is the CUTEST THING EVER.
ReplyDeleteyou say you are really into arts and crafts though, what is your favorite type to do? I love working with clay and making miniature sculptures.
i also played piano for a LONG time, so when you were playing, what were your favorite types of things to play?
